How Chinese Use the Internet: 2012 Usage Statistics

  • According to the latest data from the China Internet Network Information Center, instant messaging remains the most popular online activity in China with 445 million users (82.8% penetration of total Chinese netizen) Popular instant message tools including Tencent-owned QQ and Taobao-owned AliWangwang(阿里旺旺).
  • Search engine usage comes in second place. Baidu(百度)is the most popular search engine accounting for 79% of the market share (as of H1 2012).
  • China’s ecommerce boom has led to an increase in online banking and third party payment services, usage increased significant by 14.8% and 12.3% respectively. Alipay(支付宝) is the most used third party payment service, accounting for 48% of total market share (as of Q1 2012).
